It is a monastery of Hieronymites that was founded by Doña Ana de Santillán and Don Guzmán in 1475 for the members of the Religious Order of St Jerome.
It is a convent representive of the Catholic Kings, in which Gothic structures, Mudejar contructions techniques and Renaissance decoration are joined.
An example of it is the façade from the XVI Century, decorated with Gothic angels and consoles carried out by Pedro Millán, ceramics by Niculoso Pissano and Andrea della Robbia.
The church only has one nave covered by coffered ceiling by Diego López de Arenas from 1623.The chancel is slightly taller and is covered by Rib vaults. The cloister is in a Mudejar style. The major altarpiece is a Baroque work from 1730 carried out by José Fernando de Medinilla.
The baseboards that have been built using the technique of the “cuerda seca” (dry string) cover the major chapel together with the coat of arms made with the same technique that the one used for the decoration of the sepulchre of D. León Enriquez. The image of Santa Paula is attributed to Andrés de Ocampo from the end of the XVI Century and it could belong to the former altarpiece.
Gold or silver pieces and works of arts that were previously relegated are shown in the museum.
