El Escorial was founded by Felipe II in order to commemorate the victory of Spain in the battle of St Quentin against the French troops the 10 August 1557, Saint Lorenzo´ s Day. Its architecture is simple and austere, without ornamentation.
It was understood as a royal pantheon for his parents, Carlos e Isabel of Portugal, and also for himself and for his successors. Its well balanced composition and austerity in decoration are some of the elements that make this place so important.
