Royal Monastery of San Lorenzo del Escorial

El Escorial was founded by Felipe II in order to commemorate the victory of Spain in the battle of St Quentin against the French troops the 10 August 1557, Saint Lorenzo´ s Day. Its architecture is simple and austere, without ornamentation.

 

It was understood as a royal pantheon for his parents, Carlos e Isabel of Portugal, and also for himself and for his successors. Its well balanced composition and austerity in decoration are some of the elements that make this place so important.
