It is an impresive square because of its dimensions and buildings, a symbol of Santiago de Compostela. Everyday, hundred of pilgrims visit it and became amazed of such grandness. From here, you can see the Western façade of the cathedral.
t is considered to be one of the most beautiful squares in the world. When the archbishop decides to move his diocese to Santiago and build a great Romanesque basilica, the great square is used as warehouse and workshop for the materials that are necessary in its construction and the construction of the emblematic buildings that surround it.
Different spectacles, as known as the Fuegos del Apóstol (Apostle´ s Fire), were celebrated here. The Square is flanked by some of the most emblematic buildings of the town that ten Centuries ago were witness of History: The Rajoy Palace, the College of San Jerónimo, the Fonseca Palace and the Gelmirez Palace.
